“In the days of hand-set metal type, a ‘font’ in English was a set of characters of any one size and style: say, 8 point Baskerville italic. In this example the ‘typeface’ was Baskerville. Such a font was given a separate price and each could be bought separately: so one could buy the 8 point italic without the 8 point roman. With the coming of typesetting that generated multiple styles and sizes from a single set of master characters, this distinction broke down: ‘typefaces’ became ‘fonts’.” -Unknown Source
